What measurements does a fireplace dealer need before quoting an insert or log set?

In Asheville we need the six firebox numbers — front width, rear width, height to the opening and to the damper, and depth low and high — plus the hearth extension and whether the box is masonry or prefab. On most streets you're on the natural-gas main, so we also confirm the meter and where a line would run.

Montford masonry reads different than South Asheville

Original fireboxes in Montford and North Asheville taper toward the back and pinch at odd spots, so every number gets taken at its tightest point — a rigid insert or log frame seats on the smallest dimension, not the average. We also size the existing clay flue for a liner, since an insert needs one to vent. Newer South Asheville clean-face gas boxes wear a metal model label inside the opening; that plate hands us the unit's specs before the tape even comes out.

The part a showroom can't do

A furniture showroom can sell you a firebox, but in North Carolina it legally can't connect it to fuel — running or extending a gas line is licensed work, and we permit and pressure-test every line with Buncombe County. So the quote hinges on fuel too: we confirm you're on the natural-gas main, where the meter sits, and how far a new line has to travel to the hearth. Those distances move the number more than the appliance often does.

We're ten minutes from your door

Our showroom sits at 629 Emma Rd, so an Asheville measure-up is a quick trip rather than a scheduled expedition. Bring your own numbers by for a rough read, or let us take them — the free in-home assessment nails the opening, flue, and gas in one visit so the quote is the job.
