What length linear fireplace is best for my wall?

Proportion first — this is a design decision

A linear fireplace is architecture, so size it like architecture: on most feature walls, the unit looks right spanning roughly a third to half of the wall's width. Shorter than that and it floats like a postage stamp; wider and it crowds the corners. Center it on the seating arrangement or the architectural axis of the room — which is not always the center of the wall — and settle the viewing height early, especially if a TV or art is going above it. The wall tells you the length before any spec sheet does.

Don't let the wall out-size the room

Here's the catch nobody mentions online: longer linear units usually mean more Btu, and 40,000 BTU in a snug den will roast you out no matter how good it looks. The wall picks the length, but the room has to live with the heat — sometimes the answer is the bigger unit run low on its modulating control, sometimes it's the 42 with better proportions.
