What maintenance does a linear or modern glass-media gas fireplace need?

The same annual gas service as any unit — burner, pilot or igniter, venting, and gas connections cleaned and tested — plus more attention to the glass and the decorative media. Linear fireplaces have wide glass fronts that show every smudge, and their glass, crystals, or stones need careful cleaning and correct placement to burn right.

The glass is the whole show

Linear gas fireplaces — think Napoleon Vector 50, Heat & Glo Cosmo 42, or Majestic Meridian 42 — are built around a long ribbon flame behind a big sheet of glass, often with a TV mounted above on a cool-wall design. That expanse of glass is beautiful and unforgiving: it shows a faint white haze (a normal residue from the first burns) and any soot immediately. It needs cleaning with the manufacturer-approved fireplace glass cleaner, never Windex or an ammonia product, which can etch the ceramic glass permanently.

Media placement matters more than you'd think

Instead of logs, many linear units use fire glass, crystals, or decorative stones over the burner. That media isn't just decoration — its depth and spread affect how the flame draws and burns. Piled too deep or shoved over the ports, it can smother the flame or drive soot onto the glass. When we service a linear unit we clean the media, clear the burner ports, and reset everything to the manufacturer's pattern, then confirm the flame looks the way it should.

Don't skip the mechanical service

Under the modern styling, a linear fireplace is still a gas appliance with a burner, an electronic ignition or pilot, sealed direct-vent piping, and gas connections — all of which get the standard annual clean-and-test. The spiders-and-dust off-season clog hits these units too. Book service late summer, before the season. Maintenance starts from $189; call (828) 545-0525.
