How do I clean the decorative glass media or stones inside a linear gas fireplace?

Why the media matters more than it looks

On a linear unit — a Napoleon Vector 50 or a Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 — the glass chips, stones, or crushed rock aren't only decoration. They're arranged to shape that long ribbon flame and, just as importantly, to keep the burner ports breathing.

Pile the media wrong, bury a port, or crowd the flame path and you get lazy yellow flame tips, soot creeping across the glass, and carbon staining the reflective back panels. So "cleaning" it is really cleaning-and-replacing-correctly — the layout is part of how the fireplace runs, not just how it looks.

The careful way to clean it

Fireplace fully off and stone-cold, gas valve closed. Photograph the current layout first — or pull the manufacturer's media placement diagram — so every piece goes back where it belongs.

Release the glass front per that unit's latch or clip system. Lift the media out gently; crushed glass and stones chip and scratch, and ceramic accent pieces are brittle. Dust with a soft brush, or vacuum with a nylon stocking stretched over the hose so you don't inhale fines or lose small pieces.

Wipe the firebox floor, then rebuild the pattern exactly — keeping every burner port fully clear.

The reassembly is the trap. On a sealed direct-vent linear fireplace the glass front seats against a gasket, and a front reseated even slightly off compromises the sealed combustion the whole system depends on. Media crowded over a port soots within a few burns.
