What's the best fix for a wood-burning fireplace that smokes into the room?
For Mills River's large-lot rural homes, where a wood fire is often working heat rather than decoration, treat a smoking fireplace like a failed appliance: the usual mechanical culprits are a rusted damper, a creosote-narrowed flue, or an undersized chimney on an older farmhouse. And since many properties here run on propane, a sealed gas insert is a genuine second path.
Out here, smoke means downtime
Between Horse Shoe, Banner Farm, and the Mills River valley floor, plenty of homes sit on acreage with a serious woodpile — the fireplace isn't a mood, it's a heat source the household counts on. When one starts pushing smoke into the room, the answer is diagnostic, not decorative: is the damper opening fully, is the flue clear and correctly sized, is the crown letting water in? Those are inspection questions, and the fixes are usually mechanical, reasonably quick, and quoted upfront.
