What's the difference between a mantel and a surround?
The surround is the frame around the fireplace opening — the tile, stone, or stacked stone facing the firebox on the sides and top. The mantel is the shelf (and often the legs beneath it) that projects out over the opening. Simplest way to keep them straight: the surround is the wall treatment, the mantel is the shelf you set stockings on.
Surround, mantel — which is which
People use the words interchangeably, but they're two different things. The surround is the material facing the wall around the firebox opening — the tile, marble, stacked stone, or brick that frames the fire on the sides and across the top. The mantel is the shelf that projects out above the opening, often with legs or corbels running down each side. Easiest way to keep them straight: the surround is what you look at, the mantel is what you set things on.
Clearances are the real story
Here's what matters beyond looks. A combustible mantel or a wood surround has to sit a minimum distance from the firebox opening, and the higher the heat output, the greater that distance. Push a wood mantel too low over a hot gas fireplace and it'll discolor, dry out, and eventually become a fire hazard. This is where a heat deflector or the appliance's own heat-management design comes in — we work the mantel height and the clearances out together so your finished look is also a safe one.
Who builds what
On a typical project the stonework and carpentry — the surround facing, the mantel itself — are done by your mason or finish carpenter, and we partner with masons regularly. Our lane is the firebox, the venting, the gas line, and making sure every combustible material around it respects the clearances the manufacturer requires.
