What's the difference between a plug-in (120V) and a hardwired (240V) electric fireplace?

A plug-in 120V electric fireplace uses a standard wall outlet and tops out around 1,500 watts (about 5,000 BTU), which covers most single rooms. A hardwired 240V unit is wired directly into your electrical panel by an electrician and can draw more power for more heat — but it needs a dedicated circuit and professional wiring.

The outlet is the whole difference

A standard household outlet on a 15-amp circuit safely delivers about 1,500 watts — so a plug-in electric fireplace is capped right there, which works out to roughly 5,000 BTU and up to about 400 square feet of supplemental heat. That happens to cover the great majority of rooms people actually put an electric fireplace in. A 240-volt hardwired model skips the outlet entirely: it's wired straight into your electrical panel on its own dedicated circuit, the same way a clothes dryer or an electric range is, which lets it pull more power and push out more heat than a standard plug-in can. The flame effect is the same either way — the difference is purely how much heat the unit is allowed to draw.

Which one you actually want

For most homes, plug-in is the right answer, and the simpler one — no electrician, no wiring permit, just an outlet on the wall behind the unit. We steer people toward hardwired only when they genuinely need more output than 1,500 watts can give in a bigger room, or when they want a permanently built-in, cord-free look with no visible plug anywhere. Keep one thing in mind either way: even a 240-volt electric fireplace is still supplemental zone heat — it warms a room, not a whole mountain house, and it still goes dead in a power outage. Running a new dedicated circuit is an electrician's trade, and hearth is ours, so we coordinate that side with a licensed electrician.
