What's the difference between a prefab outdoor fireplace kit and a masonry fireplace?

A prefab (factory-built) outdoor fireplace centers on a manufactured firebox, often as a modular kit — faster to install, more predictable, and lighter on the foundation. A full masonry fireplace is built stone-by-stone on site — fully custom, extremely durable, and the priciest, longest path. Both can burn gas or wood; the right one depends on your budget, timeline, and how custom you want it.

Prefab / factory-built kits

A prefab outdoor fireplace centers on a manufactured, tested firebox — gas or wood — that arrives ready to set, sometimes as part of a modular kit with pre-formed components you assemble and then finish with stone or stucco. The upsides are real: predictable performance because the firebox is engineered and rated, a faster install, a lighter load on the slab, and a known scope.

For a gas prefab, brands like Superior and Majestic make outdoor-capable units that drop in cleanly. It's often the smart choice when you want a great result without a months-long masonry project — and it's easier to fit under a covered patio.

Full masonry

A site-built masonry fireplace is the old-world version — block, brick, and stone laid up by hand, lined and detailed for your exact patio. Nothing beats it for a one-of-a-kind look, sheer mass, and longevity; a well-built masonry fireplace is a permanent architectural feature.

The tradeoffs are cost, time, and weight: it needs a proper footing engineered to carry it, skilled masons, and weeks not days. On the technical side, the flue sizing and draft have to be right, or a beautiful stone fireplace smokes.

How Steady Flame fits in

Here's where our lane matters. We handle the fireplace-and-fire side of both — the firebox, the venting, and, for any gas unit, the licensed gas line we run, permit, and pressure-test. On a masonry build we partner with masons who lay the stone while we own the technical and gas work; you're not stitching the job together across a hardscaper, a showroom, and someone licensed to make it burn. One accountable company for the part that makes heat, one permit, one inspection, one workmanship guarantee. We'll walk your patio and weigh prefab versus masonry against your budget and timeline honestly. Call (828) 545-0525.
