Why indoor and outdoor aren't interchangeable

An indoor gas fireplace is listed and built for a conditioned, dry, protected space. Put it outside and you're exposing steel, valves, ignition modules, and wiring that were never meant to face driving rain, humidity, pollen, freeze-thaw, and insects. They rust, the electronics corrode, the burner and pilot foul, and the safety controls — the parts that prove the flame is lit and shut the gas if it isn't — start misbehaving.

Beyond the reliability nightmare, using an indoor unit outdoors falls outside its listing, which voids the manufacturer's warranty and can be flagged by an inspector. It's the kind of shortcut that costs more than it saves.

What an outdoor-rated unit gives you

Outdoor gas fireplaces are engineered for the abuse. They use stainless-steel burners and components that shrug off moisture, weather-sealed ignition and electronics, and designs that tolerate wind and temperature swings. Manufacturers we carry — Napoleon, Heat & Glo, and others — make outdoor-listed fireboxes specifically for patios, and they're rated to be installed there. That listing is also what lets us permit the job and pass inspection.

In our climate especially — humid summers, real winters, pollen season, and spiders that love to nest in burner orifices over the off-season — the outdoor-rated build is the difference between a fireplace that lights every time and one you're constantly babying.

The gas side is still ours

Whichever outdoor unit you choose, the fuel connection is licensed work.
