Can I mount a TV above an outdoor fireplace?

Yes, if the fireplace is designed for it. Certain gas fireplaces run cool-wall, keeping the space above the unit cool enough for a TV — the outdoor version of the same feature we use indoors. You still need an outdoor-rated TV, proper mounting height, and the manufacturer's clearances honored. Over a wood-burning outdoor fireplace, we'd advise against it — too much heat and soot.

It comes down to the fireplace

Mounting a TV above a fireplace is all about how much heat rises off the top of the unit. Standard fireboxes send serious heat up the wall — enough to cook the electronics behind a screen. The fix is a cool-wall fireplace: gas units engineered so the wall directly above stays cool enough for a mounted TV.

We use this feature indoors all the time — Heat & Glo's Cosmo linear is a cool-wall design made for a TV above it — and the same concept carries to outdoor-rated gas fireplaces built for patios. Get a cool-wall gas unit and a TV above it is genuinely fine.

The other pieces of the puzzle

The fireplace clearing the heat is necessary but not sufficient. The TV itself has to be an outdoor-rated model — a regular indoor set won't survive humidity, pollen, temperature swings, and the damp of a covered patio, even under a roof. Mounting height matters for both viewing comfort and staying above the manufacturer's specified clearance from the firebox.

We follow the unit's listed clearances to combustibles and to the TV zone exactly. On a covered patio the electrical for the TV is its own trade — we handle the fireplace and gas; a licensed electrician handles the outlet and wiring.

Not over wood

Over a wood-burning outdoor fireplace, our honest answer is don't. Wood fires throw unpredictable, intense heat and a steady haze of smoke and soot that films and eventually damages a screen — no cool-wall engineering tames an open wood fire. If a mounted TV is on your wish list, that alone points you toward a cool-wall gas fireplace. Come see the cool-wall units at our Asheville showroom, and we'll design the patio wall around both the fire and the screen. Call (828) 545-0525.
