What's the difference between BTU input and BTU output?
Input is the fuel energy a fireplace consumes per hour; output is the heat that actually reaches your room after losses. A unit might have a 30,000 BTU input but deliver only 20,000-plus BTU of output — the gap is efficiency. When you compare fireplaces, output is the honest number, because that's the heat you feel.
Two very different numbers
Input BTU is how much fuel energy goes in — it's what the burner is rated to consume, and what the manufacturer usually prints biggest. Output BTU is what comes out as usable heat after combustion and venting losses. The ratio between them is efficiency.
A high-efficiency sealed gas fireplace keeps most of its input as room heat; a decorative vented log set sends most of its heat up the chimney and outputs very little, by design. Same input, wildly different output.
Why the marketing number can mislead
If you shop on input alone, you can end up comparing a 40,000 BTU decorative unit that barely warms the room against a 30,000 BTU direct-vent heater that outperforms it — and pick the wrong one.
That's why we push customers to ask about output, or the efficiency and Fireplace Efficiency (FE) rating that lets you calculate it. Vented gas logs are ambiance-first; if you actually want heat, a direct-vent fireplace or a sealed insert is where the output lives.
What it means for your decision
Match the number to the job. Buying warmth for a great room in a Weaverville winter? Output is what matters, and you want a sealed, efficient unit. Buying the look of a real wood fire with the damper open? A vented log set's low output is fine — you're not counting on it for heat, and central heat handles the rest.
