What's the difference between ceramic, refractory cement, and ceramic fiber gas logs?

They're three refractory materials with different tradeoffs. Refractory ceramic and refractory cement logs are dense, heavy, and extremely durable — the long-haul workhorses. Ceramic fiber logs are lightweight and glow brightly for a more realistic ember effect, but they're more fragile. Higher-end sets often blend materials to get both realism and toughness.

The durable heavyweights

Refractory ceramic and refractory cement logs are the dense, solid sets most people picture. They're cast from real-log molds, reinforced, and built to shrug off direct flame and years of heat cycling. They're heavy, they hold their detail, and they stand up well to the occasional bump.

If you want a set-it-and-forget-it log set that keeps looking good for a long time, this is the family. The tradeoff is weight and a slightly less vivid glow than the fiber logs, since the dense material doesn't light up as brightly in the flame.

The bright-glowing lightweights

Ceramic fiber logs are made of a lightweight, insulating fiber material. Their trick is that they heat up and glow far more vividly than dense logs — the fibers light up orange in the flame, giving a very convincing look of embers and burning wood.

The cost of that realism is fragility. Fiber logs are easier to chip or crack and need gentler handling. Mendota, one of the luxury lines we carry, uses hand-cast ceramic-fiber logs to build what we consider the most convincing wood-fire look we sell.

Which we'd steer you toward

It comes down to how you weigh realism against ruggedness. For a busy family room where the set may get bumped, the dense refractory logs earn their keep. For a showpiece hearth where the look is everything — a timber-frame great room around Cashiers or Brevard — the fiber logs' glow is hard to beat.
