What should I check before lighting my gas fireplace for the first time each fall?

In Sylva, a lot of these are student and rental homes near WCU that get used hard and maintained inconsistently, so a landlord's first-fall check matters more here than most: confirm the glass seal, look for the summer's cobwebs in the pilot, and put a light up the burner. River moisture off the Tuckasegee rusts dampers and caps fast, so check outside for corrosion too.

Rentals that skipped last year's service

Near WCU, a fireplace can go a full season or more without anyone looking at it, so the odds of a dust-and-spider-clogged pilot are higher on a Sylva rental than on an owner-occupied home. Whoever's responsible — landlord or tenant — should get eyes on the pilot and burner ports before the first cold night, confirm the glass is clipped tight, and match the logs to the factory diagram. Over in the historic Dillsboro cottages, a vented gas log in an older masonry firebox also needs the damper clamped open every time it runs.

Tuckasegee moisture and cold-air drainage

The Tuckasegee valley drains cold air and holds river moisture, and that damp air rusts dampers and degrades flue liners faster than you'd expect — so a look at the outside vent terminal for corrosion belongs on the fall checklist. Sylva is mixed-fuel: on natural gas the outside job is the sidewall cap, while propane homes should gauge the tank and book a top-off before the season. At 50 minutes west, we're not around the corner, which is the real argument for a preventive check now over an emergency call in January.
