What size fireplace grate fits my firebox?

Take the firebox's real dimensions

A grate is sized by leaving room around it, so start by measuring the firebox itself. Get the width across the front opening, then measure the width across the back — fireboxes almost always taper narrower at the rear, and that back number is the one that limits your grate. Measure the depth from the front edge to the back wall, too.

Then choose a grate that leaves roughly three inches of breathing room to each side wall and sits set back a few inches from the front opening rather than poking out toward the room. The logs should ride centered over the coal bed, not shoved against the masonry.

The clearance is doing real work

That gap around the grate isn't just for looks. It lets combustion air circulate up and around the fire, keeps burning logs and coals from resting directly against the firebrick — where concentrated heat cracks and spalls masonry over time — and gives ash somewhere to fall.

Oversize the grate so it wedges against the walls and you choke airflow, stress the brick, and make the fire harder to light and keep going. Undersize it badly and logs roll off the ends. A grate that's a bit too small is a lesser sin than one that's too big.

Fit it to how you actually burn

Beyond footprint, grates vary in height, bar spacing, and whether the bed is flat or bowed to cradle logs — heavier bar stock simply lasts longer under real mountain-winter use.
