What time of year is best to have a chimney swept?
Marshall's terrain makes the timing about access as much as creosote — sweep in the warm, dry months of late summer, when we can safely get on a steep roof. Homes here cling to hillsides with tight approaches, and the narrow downtown buildings stack against the mountainside. Loose footing on an icy roof is no place to inspect a flue.
Steep lots, safer in warm weather
A lot of Marshall sits on hard-to-reach hillside lots, and the revitalized downtown is a row of narrow, multi-story buildings built right against the mountain. Roof and chimney access is genuinely trickier here than on a flat suburban lot — and far safer to do in the dry, sure-footed months than after the first freeze glazes everything over. Late summer is simply the safe window.
Getting swept early also means any repair — a repointed crown, a fresh liner — happens before the weather closes that steep access down for the season.
Gorge air fights your draft
The French Broad gorge brings cool, damp evenings and swirling air, and the tight mountainside lots complicate chimney routing and draft — cold air can sit in an under-drafting flue like a plug. A good inspection looks at how the chimney is actually pulling, not just how clean it is, which matters more on a constrained lot like these.
