What type of electric fireplace heater heats a room best — infrared or fan-forced?

Fan-forced heats a closed room more evenly; infrared feels warmer faster in drafty or open spaces because it warms people and objects directly instead of the air. Neither out-muscles the other — plug-in electric fireplaces all draw about 1,500 watts, roughly 5,000 BTU. Pick by the room: a tight modern bedroom favors fan-forced; a leaky farmhouse den with tall ceilings favors infrared.

How the two actually differ

A fan-forced heater warms air over an element and blows it into the room — gentle, even, and effective anywhere the warm air stays put, like a bedroom or office with the door closed. Infrared works the way sun through a window does: it radiates heat straight to people, furniture, and floors without needing to warm the air in between. You feel it within seconds of switching on, and it doesn't care whether the room leaks air, because it was never relying on the air to carry the heat.

Match the heater to the room, not the spec sheet

This is where WNC housing stock decides the answer. In the older, draftier homes we're in weekly around Asheville and Marshall — tall ceilings, original windows, floor plans that breathe — fan-forced heat drifts away before it accumulates, and infrared's warm-the-people approach wins. In a tight newer build in Fletcher or Arden, a fan-forced unit will hold a closed bedroom at an even, comfortable temperature all evening. Open floor plan? Infrared again — you can't heat air you can't contain.

The number neither one escapes

Both types plug into a standard outlet, which caps them near 1,500 watts — about 5,000 BTU, enough for roughly 400 square feet of supplemental warmth. Neither is a furnace substitute, and neither works when the power's out, a caveat we state plainly in a region that lived through Helene's outages.
