When is the best time of year to have a fireplace serviced?

Clyde fireplaces should be serviced by early fall for a reason you can't see from the couch: Pigeon River humidity rusts dampers and eats at masonry chimneys here faster than in drier towns, and a damper that seized over the summer is a classic Clyde October discovery. Book late summer — and at 2,612 feet, don't push it past September.

Rust never announces itself

Clyde sits low along the Pigeon, and river humidity is patient — it rusts dampers until they seize, corrodes chimney caps, and works at mortar joints season after season. None of it announces itself; a damper doesn't squeak a warning, it just refuses to open on the first cold night. That's the whole case for the annual visit here: rust caught in September is a part and an hour, rust discovered in November is a cold living room and a wait.

Ranch-era fireboxes at a crossroads

Most of Clyde's housing stock is 1960s-to-80s ranch builds, and their original fireplaces are at the age where the annual service doubles as a crossroads conversation. Some of these dated fireboxes just need their cleaning and inspection; plenty are candidates for an insert upgrade that turns a drafty relic into a genuine heater — modern inserts commonly run 70 percent efficient or better. We tell you which yours is, with no pressure attached, and the estimate for an upgrade is free.

The Haywood schedule

Clyde shares the cold-air drainage that makes Canton and Waynesville run colder than the towns down the mountain, so burning season opens early here — which moves the smart service window earlier too. We're 25 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, tune-ups start at $189, and if an upgrade comes out of the visit, the permit runs through Haywood County with the inspector met by us as the licensed gas contractor. Call (828) 545-0525 while August still has room.
