Which fireplace still works during a power outage — gas, wood, or electric?
Around Brevard, wood works flat-out, propane and natural gas work through an outage only on a millivolt or battery-backup ignition, and electric simply stops. Much of Transylvania County — the cabins, Connestee Falls, the properties off the mains — runs on propane, so which unit you choose matters even more than in the gas-main towns.
Propane country changes the shopping list
Out past the Brevard mains, most homes burn propane, and propane is friendly to outage heat when the appliance is built for it. A Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is our go-to for propane cabins — a real heater on a millivolt valve that lights by hand and keeps radiating with the grid down. For a timber-frame or mountain-modern home, a Mendota FullView delivers the same power-optional heat with a luxury flame. What won't help you in a blackout is a propane unit wired to electronic ignition with no battery, no matter how full the tank is.
If you're counting on wood, verify the flue
Brevard catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers inside the chimney chases and crawl spaces already prone to it. Wood is the gold standard for grid-down heat — heat you own outright — but only through a flue that's actually sound. A Regency wood unit does no good venting through a deteriorated liner, so a wet-climate chimney gets inspected before we call it your backup plan. Skip that step and a beautiful Regency fire is venting through a liner you can't trust — the opposite of the security you bought it for.
One licensed company, permit included
Running or extending a gas or propane line is licensed work in North Carolina — a showroom or mason can't legally connect the fuel. We can, and we pull the Transylvania County permit and pressure-test the line. We're 40 minutes southwest; the propane tank itself we coordinate with your supplier.
