Which is better for the environment, burning wood or burning gas?

At the point of use, gas burns cleaner — no smoke, no particulates drifting through the valley, and sealed combustion wastes very little. Wood is the local, renewable fuel, and a modern EPA-certified unit burning dry hardwood is dramatically cleaner than the old open fireplaces. Old smoky fireplace versus sealed gas isn't close; new EPA stove versus gas is a much fairer fight.

The smoke question, mountain edition

Around here the environmental question isn't abstract — it hangs in the air. Our valleys hold smoke on still winter nights, and a neighborhood full of old open fireplaces makes its own haze. Wood smoke is particulates, and particulates are the honest downside of burning wood; anyone with a sensitive-lunged neighbor downwind has already heard about it.

What EPA certification changed

That said, the wood-burning world has changed. An EPA-certified unit like the Regency Cascades F1500 runs at 78% efficiency, re-burning smoke an old fireplace would have sent straight up the flue — dramatically cleaner, and dramatically less wood for the same warmth. And cordwood is the one fuel here that's local and renewable: trees regrow, and the carbon a log releases was pulled from WNC air in the first place. Dry, seasoned hardwood in modern equipment is a defensible choice.

Gas's clean-burn case — and its asterisk

Gas is a fossil fuel — that's the asterisk — but at the point of use it's the cleaner burn: no smoke, no particulates, no creosote, and a sealed direct-vent unit combusts efficiently behind glass. If your real-world comparison is an old smoky open fireplace versus a sealed gas unit, gas is the environmental upgrade. If it's a new EPA stove burning dry hardwood versus gas, it's genuinely close, and we'd rather match the appliance to how you actually live than win a debate.
