Candler, North Carolina

Which type of fireplace is the cheapest to run?

Candler is propane country on our fuel map — out past the Asheville mains, a gas evening costs more than it does in town — so the cheapest fireplace to run here is wood, or a propane unit chosen for efficiency instead of looks. The decorative builder-grade fireboxes going into Candler's new subdivisions are the opposite of that.

The subdivision firebox is a placeholder

Candler is growing fast, and the new construction filling in around Enka and Sand Hill mostly ships with basic decorative fireboxes — pretty at the closing walkthrough, expensive every winter after. We meet those owners a few years in, wanting real heat. The cheaper path is to skip the interim step: whether at build time or as an upgrade, a sealed direct-vent unit or EPA appliance turns the fuel you buy into warmth you keep, at 70% efficiency or better instead of a decorative shrug.

Propane, tuned right

Because Candler homes typically run on propane rather than a metered main, every wasted BTU costs more here than it would in downtown Asheville — which makes correct setup a money issue, not a technicality. Propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures than natural gas; a mis-set appliance soots up its logs and glass while quietly burning through the tank. We're a licensed gas contractor: we set the regulator and piping, convert appliances between fuels properly, pressure-test the line, and pull the Buncombe County permit.

The Hominy Valley bowl rewards clean burns

Candler sits in a natural bowl, which is one more argument for sealed, clean-burning appliances — an EPA wood stove or direct-vent gas unit rather than a smoky open hearth. Wood remains the cheapest fuel for anyone set up to handle it. We're 15 minutes east at 629 Emma Rd; the in-home assessment is free. Call (828) 545-0525.
