Why does a gas insert heat the room better than vented gas logs with the same BTU rating?
Because a sealed gas insert captures the heat instead of letting it escape up the chimney. Vented gas logs burn with the damper open and most of their warmth goes straight up the flue — they're decorative-first. An insert's sealed firebox, glass front, and blower trap and return that heat to the room, so the same BTU rating actually warms you.
Same BTUs in, very different BTUs out
A BTU rating on the box is heat input — the fuel the appliance can burn. What matters in the room is how much of that heat you actually keep. Vented gas logs sit in your open masonry firebox and run with the damper open, exactly like a wood fire, because their tall yellow flame produces byproducts that have to go up the chimney.
Beautiful flame, but the chimney is an open straw and most of the heat rides it outside. An open masonry fireplace can even run a net heat loss, pulling warmed room air up the flue. So 30,000 BTU of vented logs and 30,000 BTU of insert are not the same heater.
How the insert keeps what it makes
A gas insert is a sealed appliance that slides into that same firebox and closes off the chimney with a properly sized liner. Combustion happens behind glass; the exhaust leaves through a small direct-vent liner while a jacket of room air flows around the hot firebox and comes back into the room, usually pushed by a blower.
Inserts commonly run 70% efficient or better, while vented logs stay decorative-first. That's why we tell people converting an old wood fireplace: if you want ambiance and low cost, gas logs are fine; if you want the room to actually get warm — and stay warm when the power's out on a millivolt or battery-backup unit — the insert earns its price.
Which one is right for you
It comes down to what you're buying. Chasing the most convincing dancing flame and using the fireplace a few evenings a season? Vented logs, like a Real Fyre set, deliver that look at lower cost.
