How many BTUs do gas logs put out?
Gas log sets carry high BTU ratings — often 40,000 up toward 90,000 — but that number is misleading, because vented logs send most of their heat straight up an open chimney. They're rated on fuel burned, not heat delivered to the room. Ventless logs, capped at 40,000 BTUs, keep nearly all that heat indoors. Same-looking product, very different warmth.
The big number on the box
A vented gas log set like the Real Fyre Charred American Oak 24-inch is rated up to 90,000 BTUs. That sounds like a furnace, but it's a decorative rating — it reflects how much gas the burner can consume to throw a tall, realistic yellow flame, not how much warmth reaches your feet. With the damper open (which vented logs require), most of that heat goes right up the chimney. We're upfront about this: vented logs are the closest gas comes to a real wood fire on looks, and they're ambiance, not a primary heater.
Vented versus ventless output
Ventless (vent-free) logs are the opposite story. They burn with the damper closed and put nearly all their heat into the room — genuinely efficient supplemental warmth, some running 99.9% efficiency. That's why they're capped by code at 40,000 BTUs: at that output in a closed room, they add real heat and some indoor moisture, so there are room-size limits, an oxygen-depletion shutoff, and rules against bedrooms and bathrooms. So 'how many BTUs do gas logs put out' has two honest answers: a big decorative input number for vented sets, and up to 40,000 BTUs of real room heat for ventless. If you want the wood-fire look and have a working chimney, vented is the move — and you don't buy it for heat.
