Why does my gas fire pit light unevenly across the burner?
A gas fire pit that lights unevenly — flames on one side, dead spots on the other — usually has blocked burner ports or media piled over them. Spiders, corrosion, grit, and too-deep fire glass clog the holes so gas only escapes where it can. Low supply pressure and a wrong-fuel orifice can also leave cold zones.
Blocked ports are the usual reason
An uneven flame — roaring on one side, nothing on the other — almost always means some of the burner ports are blocked. A fire pit burner is just a pipe or ring drilled with holes, and gas takes the path of least resistance: if half the holes are plugged, all the gas rushes out the open ones and the clogged section stays dark.
Outdoors, those ports foul fast. Spiders love to build nests in warm burner tubes, corrosion from rain and mountain humidity narrows the holes, and grit and ash settle in over time. Clearing and cleaning the ports, or replacing a badly corroded burner, evens the flame right back out.
Check what's on top of the burner
The other everyday cause sits in plain sight: the media. Fire glass or lava rock piled too deep, or shoveled unevenly, physically smothers the ports underneath it. Gas can't push up through a thick drift of glass, so it migrates to the shallow spots and lights there instead.
Keep the media layer shallow and even — a thin, level covering, not a mound — and never bury the ignitor or the burner center. Use only media rated for gas fire pits, too. The wrong rock traps moisture, and decorative stone that isn't meant for fire can crack or pop when it heats.
Pressure, orifice, and normal startup
If the burner's clean and the media's right, low gas pressure can leave the far side of a large burner starved — the flame simply runs out of push before it reaches the end. A ring burner also lights progressively, so a few seconds of the flame chasing around the ring at startup is normal; a permanent dead zone is not.
