Why does my gas fireplace burn differently after being converted between natural gas and propane?

Black Mountain runs on the natural-gas main, but the Swannanoa Valley's cold-air inversions make winter mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville — so a fireplace that isn't burning right after a fuel change gets noticed fast. Most often it's a used unit brought from a propane home and never re-jetted for gas, so it burns weak exactly when you need it most.

Why a starved flame shows up first on a cold morning

Montreat's heavily wooded, shaded lots and the valley's temperature inversions mean the flue sits cold and the mornings bite. A fireplace on the gas main needs a wide orifice and full gas flow at low pressure; leave a propane-sized jet in it and the burner under-fires, so on a 15-degree Ridgecrest morning it simply can't push heat. Converting up to natural gas means a larger burner orifice, usually a new pilot orifice, and a regulator dialed to natural-gas pressure.

Some change is normal, sooting is not

Propane naturally burns hotter and more yellow, so a properly converted unit won't look identical on the two fuels. But soot, a flame that roars, or a pilot that won't hold are signs the swap was never finished. We're only 15 minutes east of the Emma Rd showroom, so verifying your setup on-site is easy.
