Why does my gas fireplace burn differently after being converted between natural gas and propane?

Candler is split on fuel: newer Enka-Candler subdivisions tap the natural-gas main, while properties out toward the Pisgah Highway and up Hominy Valley run on propane. That split is why converted fireplaces here often burn wrong — a unit set for one fuel gets moved to the other. On propane a gas-jetted burner soots; on gas a propane-jetted one starves.

Propane carries over twice the energy per cubic foot and meters at higher pressure through a smaller orifice; run it through a natural-gas jet and it over-fires and soots, and in Hominy Valley's natural bowl that soot is an air-quality problem, not just dirty glass. The manufacturer's kit resets the orifice, pilot, and regulator to the fuel you actually have.

Because the valley traps air, a clean-burning sealed appliance is worth the most here — and clean burning depends entirely on correct orifice size and regulator pressure, confirmed on a manometer. A sooting unit isn't 'just how propane burns'; it's an unfinished conversion.
