Why does my gas fireplace hum or buzz?
A hum or buzz on a gas fireplace is almost always something electrical vibrating — most often the blower motor, but sometimes the low-voltage transformer, a loose glass front, or the valve's solenoid. A smooth, low hum from the blower is normal. A new buzz, rattle, or grind usually means dry bearings, a loose part, or debris packed into the fan.
Where the sound is actually coming from
Start by noticing when the noise shows up. If it only hums once the fire has been running a few minutes, that is the blower kicking in on its snap-disc — a heat-triggered switch that waits for the firebox to warm up. If it buzzes the instant you turn the unit on, before any heat, you are more likely hearing the transformer or receiver that powers the ignition and the valve's solenoid. And a tinny rattle that comes and goes with the flame is often just the glass front or a trim panel vibrating in sympathy — an easy fix once we find the loose screw.
A blower hum is usually fine — until it grinds
Most of the units we install — Napoleon, Heat & Glo, Kozy Heat — offer an optional blower that pushes warm air into the room, and a soft, steady hum from that fan is completely normal. What is not normal is a hum that grows into a grind, squeal, or rattle over a season or two. That is usually the motor bearings drying out, or dust and pet hair packed into the squirrel-cage fan — something we see weekly in older Asheville homes that run the blower all winter. Vacuuming the cage sometimes quiets it; a worn motor gets replaced. Either way it is an inexpensive part and quick labor.
When a buzz means it's time to call
Have us look if the hum comes with a burning or electrical smell, if it buzzes loudly even with the blower switched off (that points to the transformer, receiver, or gas valve rather than the fan), or if it started right after a power flicker. Never open the gas valve or the wiring yourself — that is licensed work, and it is ours. Most of these are a single-visit fix.
