Why does my pilot light keep blowing out at my windy mountain home?

A pilot that keeps dying at a windy home usually means wind is reaching a flame that should be sealed off from it — a compromised direct-vent termination, or an older open-combustion unit — or a weak thermocouple that drops out at the first flicker. On a gas appliance, this is a job for a trained technician, never a DIY fix.

Wind shouldn't reach a sealed fireplace

If you have a modern direct-vent gas fireplace, wind has no business touching the pilot — the whole combustion chamber is sealed and vented through one coaxial pipe. So when gusts blow it out, it's a clue: the termination cap may be damaged or poorly placed on an exposed ridge, a seal or gasket may have failed, or the vent may be partly blocked so wind can push against the flame.

Older B-vent and vented-log setups are more open by design and genuinely more wind-sensitive, which is one reason we so often recommend converting them to sealed direct-vent up here.

When it's the flame sensor, not the wind

Sometimes "the wind blew it out" is really a tired thermocouple or thermopile — the small sensor that proves the pilot is lit and holds the gas valve open. As it weakens with age, spider webs, or soot, it takes less and less to make the valve think the flame is gone and shut the gas down. A draft that a healthy sensor would ride out becomes an outage.

This is the classic WNC off-season problem, too: spiders and dust clog the pilot assembly over summer, and the first windy cold night it won't hold.

Get it diagnosed, don't chase it

Pinning down whether it's the termination, a seal, or the sensor takes a trained technician with the right instruments — and a gas appliance is no place for DIY guesswork. We don't guess; we test the millivolt output, inspect the venting, and fix the actual fault, usually in a single visit with common parts on the truck.
