Why does my propane fire pit tank frost over or lose pressure while burning?

That frost is normal physics, not a leak. Your fire pit pulls propane vapor fast, and to make vapor the liquid inside has to boil — which draws heat right out of the tank walls. So the tank chills, frosts up, and pressure drops until the flame shrinks. A bigger tank, or hard-plumbing to your house tank, fixes it.

Refrigeration in a bottle

Vaporizing propane absorbs heat — the same principle behind a refrigerator. A little 20-lb cylinder feeding a 60,000-BTU fire pit on a cool Asheville evening can't boil fast enough to keep up, so it pulls heat out of its own metal walls. The tank gets cold, frost or dew forms on the outside, vapor pressure falls, and your flame drops. It's not dangerous and it's not a defect — the cylinder is just undersized for that draw.

When it gets worse

Three things stack the deck: cold ambient air (our mountain evenings stay cool most of the year), a nearly empty cylinder with little liquid left to boil, and a big burner running wide open. Two 'fixes' people try that you should never do: don't warm a tank with a flame or heat gun, and don't bring a cylinder indoors. Both are genuinely dangerous.

The real fix

You need more surface area and more liquid. Step up to a larger cylinder, or hard-plumb the fire pit to your home's big propane tank — which never frosts under a fire pit's draw.
