Can propane freeze or stop flowing in very cold weather?

Propane won't freeze at any temperature WNC will ever see — it doesn't turn solid until around -306°F. But in bitter cold it can stop flowing, because the liquid has to boil into vapor to feed your fireplace, and near propane's -44°F boiling point — or with a low, undersized tank — it can't vaporize fast enough. Keeping the tank above 30% is the real fix.

Freezing versus failing to vaporize

This is the mix-up we untangle every winter. Propane doesn't actually freeze until around -306°F, so it will never gel at mountain temperatures. What people call a 'frozen tank' is really low vapor pressure: propane has to boil off the surface of the liquid to feed the line, and that process slows down as it nears its -44°F boiling point — or when the tank runs low, with less liquid surface to vaporize. Less pressure, weaker flame.

What actually causes it in the mountains

The recipe is a hard cold snap plus a tank down near 20% plus high demand — a fireplace, furnace, and water heater all pulling at once on the coldest night. Small tanks suffer most; a properly sized 500-gallon tank, above ground or buried, has plenty of liquid surface to keep up. Regulators can also frost or ice if moisture got into the system, which is another reason the dry-tank leak test matters.

How to stay ahead of it

Keep the tank above 30% through winter, size the tank for your total connected load, and don't let a fireplace share a marginal tank with a hungry furnace on the worst week of the year.
