Can propane freeze or stop flowing in very cold weather?

In most of Asheville the question barely applies — Montford, North Asheville, and the South Asheville corridors sit on the natural-gas main, and natural gas doesn't lose flow in the cold. It's the propane homes, older conversions, and rural edges above the city where a tank can stop feeding on a bitter night, and even then propane never truly freezes.

Gas-main city, propane on the edges

Because so much of Asheville draws from the natural-gas main, the classic 'frozen propane' call is really a story for the homes just outside it — a cabin off Town Mountain, a conversion in the older Montford blocks that kept its buried tank, the properties climbing toward the ridges. Natural gas arrives at line pressure and doesn't care how cold the night gets. Propane has to boil off the top of the liquid in your tank to make vapor, and that boiling slows as the mercury drops and as the tank empties.

Why a low tank fails on our coldest nights

Asheville's elevation keeps nighttime lows in the 20s well into early spring, and those are exactly the nights a tank sitting near 20 percent can't keep up. Propane doesn't gel until roughly 306 degrees below zero, so it will never solidify here — what people feel is weak vapor pressure and a lazy flame when a fireplace, furnace, and water heater all pull at once. A tank kept above 30 percent and sized to the whole connected load carries you through.

We're right here on Emma Road

Our showroom sits at 629 Emma Road in West Asheville, so a no-flow call in town is a short drive for us. If your fireplace weakens while the gauge still reads full, that points to a regulator or system fault rather than the weather, and it's a licensed-gas service visit, not a DIY fix. Call (828) 545-0525.
