Can propane freeze or stop flowing in very cold weather?

In Black Mountain the timing is the story: the Swannanoa Valley's temperature inversions make winter mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and those pre-dawn lows are exactly when a low propane tank struggles to vaporize. Downtown mostly runs on the gas main and sidesteps it entirely, but Montreat's wooded lots and the higher ground lean propane.

Why the coldest hour matters most

Propane doesn't freeze — it stays liquid until roughly 306 below — but it has to boil into vapor to feed your fireplace, and that boil slows as the air gets colder. Black Mountain's inversions pool the coldest air on the valley floor around dawn, precisely when a tank near 20 percent has the least vapor pressure to give. A full, correctly sized tank has plenty of liquid surface to keep the flame steady through that cold snap.

Two fuel realities in one town

Downtown Black Mountain and much of the valley are on the natural-gas main, where cold-flow simply isn't a concern — the gas arrives at line pressure regardless of the thermometer. Head up into Montreat's shaded, wooded lots or the ridges toward Ridgecrest and propane takes over, and there the winter rule is simple: keep the tank above 30 percent and don't let the fireplace share a marginal tank with the furnace on the worst night.
