Can propane freeze or stop flowing in very cold weather?
Arden's 1980s and '90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland were built with open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of the room, and the fix — a sealed gas insert — also settles the cold-weather question. On Arden's natural-gas main there's no tank to run low or freeze; the fireplace runs at line pressure no matter how cold the night.
From drafty box to real heater
Those tired open fireboxes lose more heat up the flue than they give back, and on a cold night an open damper is an invitation for cold air to spill in. A sealed direct-vent insert turns that liability into a genuine heater — and because Arden sits on the natural-gas main, it also means no propane tank to watch, no vapor-pressure worry, no refill to schedule. Flame at a switch, warmth when the power's out.
If you're one of the propane exceptions
A handful of Arden's outlying properties still run propane, and there the winter rule is the same one that holds across the mountains: propane has to boil into vapor to feed the burner, and a tank near 20 percent on a hard night can't make it fast enough. It won't freeze — it just loses pressure. Keep it above 30 percent, sized to the whole house, and the flame stays strong.
Fifteen minutes south, permitted
Arden is a quick fifteen minutes south of our Emma Road showroom, and every insert and gas line is permitted with Buncombe County and pressure-tested — licensed work a mason or handyman can't legally connect. If a propane flame fades on a full gauge, suspect the regulator. Call (828) 545-0525.
