Why does my ventless gas fireplace keep shutting itself off?
In Marshall the tight, multi-story downtown buildings stacked against the mountainside change the answer. In a small, closed room a vent-free unit can genuinely draw the oxygen down until its sensor shuts the burner off for real — while in the older hillside homes that leak plenty of air, the same shut-off almost always means a fouled pilot.
Small rooms in narrow downtown buildings
Marshall's revitalized downtown is built narrow and tall against the hillside, and the living spaces inside can be genuinely small. A vent-free fireplace burns its fuel right in that room, so a snug, closed space plus a slightly oversized unit is a real recipe for a legitimate oxygen shutoff. If opening a door keeps it lit, that's your answer — these units carry per-room Btu limits and aren't allowed in bedrooms for exactly this reason.
Hillside homes and the gorge damp
The older hillside homes leak enough air that a true oxygen trip is unlikely; there the cause is the ordinary one — a dust- or web-fouled pilot the sensor misreads. The French Broad gorge's damp evenings add a little corrosion to that pilot over time. Either way, clearing and re-aiming it is a maintenance visit rather than a repair.
Madison County, mind the access
Marshall's steep, tight lots can complicate any hearth work, and we plan for that. Gas lines go on a Madison County permit and get pressure-tested — licensed work a handyman legally can't do. We're 25 minutes north of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
