Why does smoke come out of a second fireplace or flue when I use the main one?
Smoke crossing into a second fireplace means the two flues are pulling against each other — the working fire depressurizes the house, and the idle chimney becomes the easiest path for make-up air to enter, dragging smoke from the shared stack or down the cold second flue and into that room. It's usually a house-pressure and chimney-layout problem, not a mystery.
Two flues, one tug-of-war
When one fireplace burns, it consumes a surprising amount of household air and lowers the pressure inside the house. That air has to be replaced from somewhere, and an unused chimney is often the biggest, easiest opening in the building. So make-up air pours down the cold, idle flue — and if that flue shares a masonry stack with the one you're using, it can drag smoke right back down into the second firebox.
When the stack itself is the problem
Many older Asheville homes have several flues bundled into one chimney with the caps close together. Smoke leaving the working flue can roll straight into the mouth of the idle one, especially when their tops sit at the same height. Inside, a cracked or missing division wall between flues lets exhaust cross over where it never should. Either way, what you smell in the second room is your first fire's exhaust taking a shortcut.
What we look for
This is a level 2 inspection job — we camera each flue, check the division walls, and measure cap heights, because the fix is specific to the cause. Sometimes it's a taller cap or a top-sealing damper on the idle flue to stop the downdraft; sometimes it's sealing or rebuilding a compromised division wall; often it's addressing the house pressure that started the whole tug-of-war.
