Why is my electric fireplace making a clicking or grinding noise?
A clicking or grinding electric fireplace almost always comes from the two moving parts that create the flame illusion and the heat — the small motor that spins the flicker rod, or the blower fan — not from anything burning. A steady click is usually the flame-rod motor's bushing drying out; a grind is typically the fan hitting dust or a warped blade. Both are repairable.
Where the noise is actually coming from
An electric fireplace has exactly two things inside it that move, and one of them is your noise. The first is the small motor that slowly spins a shaped rod or reflector in front of the LEDs — that's what makes the flames appear to dance. As its bushing dries out or wears, it starts to tick, click, or squeak, and you'll often notice the flame effect stuttering or strobing at the same time.
The second is the heater's blower fan. When that bearing wears or the blade collects dust and lint, it grinds, rattles, or hums. Grinding almost always means the fan; a rhythmic click almost always means the flicker motor.
Quick things to rule out
Unplug the unit, wait for it to cool, and vacuum the intake and outlet louvers — a surprising amount of noise is just dust loading the fan. Look for anything that shifted: a loose ember-bed piece, decorative media, or the flicker rod knocked off its track during a move.
A single soft click when the heater switches on or off is normal — that's just a relay, and it's supposed to do that. What isn't normal is a continuous grind, a metal-on-metal scrape, or a click that never stops while the flame runs.
