Why is my fireplace damper stuck open or closed?
In Fletcher, natural gas runs along the mains and a lot of the 1990s subdivision homes have builder-grade prefab fireplaces — which changes the damper picture, since factory-built fireboxes use a lightweight metal damper, not a heavy masonry throat plate, and those warp, lose their handle linkage, or jam with debris. Don't force one; the sheet metal bends.
Prefab dampers fail differently
The builder-grade fireplaces that came with Fletcher's 1990s subdivisions are factory-built zero-clearance units, and their dampers are stamped metal on a light linkage rather than the cast throat damper you'd find in old masonry. They stick when the plate warps from heat, when the handle rod bends or disconnects, or when debris falls into the works. Because Fletcher sits on the natural-gas mains, many of these boxes have since been fitted with gas — and a sealed direct-vent gas unit has no damper to jam at all.
Commercial buildings raise the stakes
Fletcher's airport-area commercial demand runs high, and in a business the same stuck-open damper quietly bleeds conditioned air and money up the flue year-round. Stuck closed is the safety problem anywhere: smoke has nowhere to go the moment a fire is lit. On a vented gas installation the damper should already be clamped open — if it's drifting, have it checked.
Repair, replace, or upgrade
We're about 20 minutes south of our Asheville showroom. On prefab boxes we service the metal damper or, when the whole unit is near end of life, recommend replacing it — often with a sealed gas fireplace that ends the damper question. Gas work gets a Henderson County permit and an inspection. Call (828) 545-0525.
