Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

Why is my outdoor gas fire pit rusting so fast in WNC?

Your fire pit is rusting fast because WNC's humidity, frequent rain, and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on any outdoor metal — and if yours is painted or powder-coated steel rather than stainless, moisture creeps under the finish and corrodes it from beneath. Water pooling in the burner pan speeds it up. Material choice and keeping water out are the two real fixes.

The humid-mountain reality

Our climate is tougher on outdoor metal than most people expect. Between mountain fog, heavy rain, morning dew, and long humid stretches, a fire pit is rarely fully dry — and then winter's freeze-thaw pops any protective finish loose. Water that collects in the burner pan or under lava rock sits against the metal for days. That constant moisture, not one rainstorm, is what turns a good-looking pit into a rusty one in a season or two.

It's usually the material

Most fast-rusting pits are painted or powder-coated steel. That finish looks great day one, but the moment it chips at an edge or a weld, water gets under it and corrosion spreads out of sight. Stainless steel — ideally 304 or marine grade — resists rust without relying on a coating, which is why the outdoor gas pits and burners we install lean stainless. If your burner or orifice is already corroded, that's a part we can service rather than a reason to scrap the whole pit.

Slowing it down

You can't change WNC's humidity, but you can keep water off the metal: cover the pit when it's idle, keep the burner-pan drain holes clear so water doesn't stand, and don't let wet leaves or pine straw pack against it. Wiping it down and drying it after a hard rain goes a long way. If it's past cosmetic — a corroded burner affecting how it lights — call (828) 545-0525 and we'll take a look.
