Why is the metal chase cover on my fireplace chimney rusting and streaking, and what replacement holds up in WNC's humid climate?
Almost always because the original cover is thin galvanized steel, and WNC humidity plus standing water rusts it — the orange streaks running down your siding are that rust washing off. The fix is a new cover in stainless steel (best in our climate) or copper, built with a slight slope, or "cross-break," so water sheds instead of pooling.
What a chase cover is, and why it fails
On a factory-built (prefab, zero-clearance) fireplace, the "chase" is the framed box that houses the chimney, and the chase cover is the metal lid on top of it. Builders often top it with flat galvanized steel — cheap, and it ponds water instead of shedding it. In a few WNC seasons of humidity and rain, that flat panel rusts, and the runoff streaks orange down your siding.
The streaking is the visible symptom. The real problem is what comes next: once the cover rusts through, water gets down into the chase, where it rots framing and can work its way toward the firebox. That's why you don't want to just paint over it.
What actually holds up here
Stainless steel is the standard we recommend for the mountains — it won't rust and it lasts for decades in our humidity. Copper is the premium-look option and holds up just as well. But the metal is only half of it; the fabrication details are what stop the streaking for good: a cross-break so the cover drains to the edges, deep overhanging sides with a drip edge, and correctly sized openings with proper storm collars around the flue pipes. A well-made cover ends this problem permanently.
Check the whole top while you're at it
Streaks usually mean water's been sitting a while, so we don't just swap the lid — we look at the flashing, the chase framing, the flue and cap, and, on masonry chimneys, the crown. Prefab units typically last 15 to 30 years, and a failing cover shortens that if water's already gotten in.
