Yes — the blower only circulates warm air faster; it doesn't make the heat. A direct-vent or vent-free insert with millivolt or battery-backup ignition keeps burning and radiating heat through the glass and firebox with the power out, blower or not. You lose some reach into the room without the fan, so the warmth stays closer to the unit — but it's real heat.
The blower is a fan, not the furnace
The blower was never what made the heat. It's just a fan that pushes already-warm air off the unit and out into the room faster. The heat itself comes from the burner and radiates through the glass and the firebox whether the fan spins or not.
So when the power drops and the blower goes quiet, a gas insert with the right ignition keeps right on warming the space. This is the single most common outage question we field in WNC — and the answer reassures a lot of people.
What you lose without the fan
You don't lose the heat; you lose some of its reach. Without the blower moving air, the warmth stays more radiant — strong right in front of the unit and slower to spread to the far corners of the room.
In a big open great room you'll notice the difference; in a normal-sized room or a small cabin, you'll barely care. It's the trade between convective spread and radiant heat, and radiant is exactly what you want hugging the fireplace during an outage anyway.
The ignition is the real question
Whether an insert runs in an outage comes down to ignition, not the blower. A millivolt or battery-backup system lights and burns with no household power — that's your power-optional heat. A purely electronic ignition with no battery backup won't fire at all until the grid returns.
