Do gas logs still work when the power is out?
Usually yes — most gas log sets use a standing pilot and a millivolt valve, which need no household electricity to light or burn, so they keep working through an outage. If yours has an electronic-ignition switch or a remote receiver running on house power, it won't light until you add the battery backup or the power returns. Vented logs are ambiance, though, not much heat.
Standing pilot means outage-proof
Most traditional gas log sets light off a standing pilot and a millivolt valve — a setup that makes its own electricity from the heat of the pilot flame and needs nothing from your household wiring. So when the power drops in an ice storm, those logs light and burn exactly the same as always.
This is one of the quiet advantages of gas logs in the mountains: flame at the flip of a switch, grid or no grid. We install a lot of these in older Asheville homes precisely for that reason.
Where it gets complicated
The catch is how yours is switched. If your logs use a basic on/off valve or a millivolt wall switch, you're fine in an outage. But if someone added an electronic-ignition system, a remote, or a receiver that runs on household current, that control won't fire when the power's out — until you drop in the battery backup those systems are designed to take, or the power comes back.

Don't confuse 'works' with 'heats'
Here's the honest part: vented gas logs working in an outage doesn't make them a heater. A vented set burns with the damper open and sends most of its heat straight up the chimney — it's ambiance first, the closest gas gets to a real wood fire.
