In most cases, no — a clean install works around your mantel, tile, and drywall, not through them. An insert slides into the opening you already have. A brand-new direct-vent unit may need a small sealed vent penetration and some framing, but we cut only where the venting and clearances require and protect every finish we can.

It comes down to what you're installing. Adding a brand-new direct-vent gas fireplace to a wall that never had one is a bigger reach: we frame a chase for the unit and cut a single sealed penetration for the coaxial vent through a sidewall or roof. Even then, we cut only what the venting and clearances demand — nothing decorative comes down for the fun of it.
Where cutting is unavoidable
Two things sometimes mean opening a wall: routing the gas line and running the vent. Where a line has to travel behind finished drywall, we make a clean access cut and close it back up — though final mudding and paint are often handed to your own finisher so the color matches perfectly. We tell you exactly where those cuts land at the quote, not as a surprise on install day. And if your mantel or tile sits too close to the firebox to meet code clearances, we flag that before we start — a combustible mantel above a hot unit is a real limit, not a preference.
Protecting what's already there
Our crews put down floor protection and drop cloths, work clean, and haul off the debris — you shouldn't be sweeping up after us. Stone, tile, and stacked-stone surrounds are honored with their proper clearances so nothing cracks from heat down the road.
