Will my fireplace put out less heat on propane than on natural gas?
No — an Arden fireplace produces the same rated heat on propane as on natural gas. Turning tired fireboxes into real heaters
A lot of Arden's established neighborhoods — Skyland, Royal Pines, Glenn Bridge — were built with open masonry fireplaces that look nice and heat poorly, pulling warm room air straight up the chimney. Dropping a sealed gas insert into one of those turns it into a genuine heater that commonly runs 70 percent efficient or better, and it keeps working during an outage if it has battery-backup or millivolt ignition. These homes almost all sit on the natural-gas main, so the conversion usually stays on natural gas — but if a property were on propane, the same insert would put out the same heat.
The rating lives in the appliance
When we set an insert's output, that BTU figure comes from the unit, not from which gas feeds it. Propane packs more energy per cubic foot, so it's metered through smaller injectors at a higher pressure; natural gas uses larger openings. Get the hardware matched to the fuel and the flame reaches full rating either way. The soot-and-weak-flame problems people blame on propane are really a conversion that skipped the pressure check.
