Will my fireplace put out less heat on propane than on natural gas?

No — a Brevard fireplace on propane throws the same rated heat as the identical unit on a natural-gas line. Brevard is propane country on our fuel map — the mains thin out fast and the cabins toward Connestee Falls and Pisgah Forest run tanks — but that's no heat penalty. A propane appliance, set up right, hits its full BTU rating.

Propane is the Transylvania default, not a compromise

Out here the gas main doesn't reach most homes, so propane does the work, and it does it well. Propane is more energetic per cubic foot than natural gas, so a tank home actually burns less volume for the same warmth. For the timber-frame and mountain-modern houses this county is known for, we often set a Mendota FullView or a Kozy Heat Springfield — both offered in propane — and they anchor a great room with real heat. The tank is sized and filled by your propane supplier; we handle the regulator, the piping, and the appliance connection.

Why a wrong setup gets blamed on propane

When someone says their fireplace runs weak on propane, the fuel almost never deserves the blame. It's usually a natural-gas unit that was never properly converted — the injectors are too large, the manifold pressure was never verified, and the burner over-fires into soot. We convert with the manufacturer's kit, set pressure with a gauge, and account for elevation. Brevard's 80-plus inches of annual rain is hard on chimneys, so if you're converting an old open fireplace we check the flue and crown at the same time.

Permitted with Transylvania County

Gas work is licensed in North Carolina — a hardscaper or general contractor legally can't connect a propane line, and unpermitted work can void insurance. We pull the Transylvania County permit, meet the inspector, and pressure-test the system. Brevard sits about 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom, an easy run for an assessment or annual service. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home estimate.
