Wood-burning insert vs gas insert — which should I choose?

Maggie Valley is propane-only country at 3,000-plus feet, and how you use the house matters as much as fuel. For a cabin or vacation rental that sits idle then must light instantly for guests, a gas insert off the propane tank is hard to beat. For a full-time home with a wood source, a wood insert is cheaper, grid-independent heat. Both seal a drafty firebox into a real heater.

Propane-only, and one of the coldest spots we serve

There are no natural-gas mains up in Maggie Valley — it's propane country, so a gas insert connects to your tank and gets set up for LP, which burns hotter per unit and needs the right orifices and pressures to avoid sooting. At 3,000-plus feet this is one of the coldest communities we cover, and the heating season is long, so the appliance has to genuinely heat, not just look good. A wood insert delivers the most heat per dollar if you've got wood; a gas insert delivers it without the work.

The rental factor

Maggie Valley runs on vacation rentals and cabins, and that changes the calculus. A fireplace that sits cold for weeks then has to impress guests on a Friday night wants gas — flip a switch, instant flame, no one hauling wood or cleaning ash between stays. A wood insert asks for a person who'll tend it, which suits an owner-occupied cabin more than a rental. Whatever goes in sits idle a lot, so book a pre-season service before peak months; spiders and dust clog a pilot over the off-season.
