Wood-burning insert vs gas insert — which should I choose?
Marshall's terrain shapes the job as much as the fuel. Steep hillside lots and narrow downtown buildings built against the mountainside make access and chimney routing tricky, and the French Broad gorge causes downdrafts — both of which favor a sealed insert with a properly sized liner. Choose gas for switch-on heat or wood for independent, cheaper warmth; either one tames a drafty open firebox.
Steep lots, tight routing, better draft
A lot of Marshall sits on steep hillsides with limited access, and the revitalized downtown is narrow multi-story buildings wedged against the slope. That complicates chimney routing and, combined with the French Broad gorge, makes open fireplaces prone to downdrafts — cold air spilling back down the flue instead of smoke going up. A sealed insert with a correctly sized stainless liner largely solves that: controlled combustion air and a right-sized flue draft far more reliably than a big open firebox. Gas or wood, and the license
Marshall's fuel is mixed — natural gas in parts of town, propane on the outlying properties — and a gas insert works on either once it's set for your fuel. It gives you instant, thermostatic heat with no chores. A wood insert costs less to run if you have wood and keeps you fully independent of both the grid and the fuel company. Running gas is licensed work in North Carolina; a mason or handyman legally can't connect it. We run the line, pull the Madison County permit, and pressure-test before lighting.
