Wood-to-gas vs wood-to-electric conversion — which is better for my fireplace?

Tight sites change the install

Marshall's downtown climbs the mountainside in narrow, stacked buildings, and the residential lots are steep and tight — access alone can shape what's practical. An insert has an advantage here, since it vents through the chimney you already have rather than cutting a new run; but the French Broad gorge, with its tall trees and swirling air, is prone to downdrafts that make draft finicky in an open flue. A wood-to-electric conversion sidesteps venting completely, which on a difficult site is a real, tangible simplification.

What each buys you, and why we assess the site first

What you give up for that simplicity is heat and outage performance. A sealed gas insert runs 70 percent efficient or better and keeps burning on millivolt ignition when the power drops; where a chimney genuinely can't be used, a direct-vent unit can go out a sidewall instead — sealed combustion, no chimney required. Electric gives you the flame and about 5,000 BTU of supplemental warmth, and nothing during an outage. The fuel here is mixed, and running or extending any gas line is licensed work we permit and pressure-test.
