Are gas fire pit fumes harmful to breathe?
No, a properly working gas fire pit outdoors is not harmful to breathe. Natural gas and propane burn cleanly to mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor — there's no wood smoke and no fine particulate. Outdoors, endless fresh air dilutes the exhaust. The one rule: a gas fire pit is an outdoor appliance only, never run in an enclosed space.
Clean combustion, no smoke to speak of
A gas fire pit isn't burning wood, so it doesn't make wood smoke — the stuff loaded with fine PM2.5 particulate that irritates lungs. When natural gas or propane burns completely, the byproducts are almost entirely carbon dioxide and water vapor, with only trace amounts of the things people worry about. Outdoors, there's effectively unlimited fresh air moving around the flame, so nothing concentrates. That's a world apart from sitting in a plume of campfire smoke that follows you around the ring.
When it can actually become a problem
The exception is enclosure. A gas fire pit belongs on an open patio, not a closed gazebo, a tented pergola, a screened porch with the panels shut, or — never — a garage. Any combustion appliance run in a tight, unventilated space can build up carbon monoxide, and gas is no exception. Keep it in open air and you sidestep that entirely. If wind is steadily blowing exhaust straight into your face, reposition your seating rather than lean into it.
Soot means it needs a look
If you're seeing black soot on the lava rock or fire glass, or smelling a sharp odor, that's incomplete combustion — usually a fuel-air mixture that's off, or the wrong orifice for your fuel. On a propane fire pit set up like it's on natural gas, you'll get that sooty, smelly burn. It's a tuning issue, not a design flaw.
