Is an outdoor wood fireplace healthier than an indoor one since the smoke stays outside?
Generally yes — an outdoor wood fireplace keeps the combustion and smoke outside your living space, so you're not breathing back-puffed smoke indoors the way a poorly drafting indoor fireplace can leak it. But "outside" isn't "gone": the smoke still drifts, can blow back at your seating or in through open windows and doors, and travels to neighbors downwind.
The real advantage is location
With an indoor wood fireplace, a cold flue, a downdraft, or a house under negative pressure can push smoke back into the room — and in a tight home that particulate lingers. An outdoor fireplace vents straight to open sky and never shares air with your bedrooms and living room. That's a genuine air-quality win for the inside of your house, and it's why plenty of folks who love a wood fire keep it out on the patio.
Where the smoke still finds you
The smoke doesn't vanish at the property line. On a still night, or in one of our valleys and coves where cool air settles and traps things low, a plume can hang right at seating height. Wind can carry it back through an open kitchen window or a cracked patio door. And it still drifts to the neighbors. So an outdoor wood fireplace is better for your indoor air — not automatically better for the air you're breathing while you sit next to it.
If clean air outdoors is the goal
