This is the one question that trips up more Asheville homeowners than any rule about pit size. Addresses in Montford, North Asheville, West Asheville, and Biltmore Village usually fall inside the city, where the Asheville Fire Department governs your fire pit. But plenty of homes that read 'Asheville' actually sit in unincorporated Buncombe County, where the county's open-burning rules apply instead — a different desk to call and a different set of conditions.

Before your first fire, pin down which side of the line your lot is on. It decides who you confirm the current rules with, and whether a city ordinance or a county rule sets your clearances.

Close-in lots reward a gas feature

Montford's tightly spaced historic homes and West Asheville's narrow lots leave little room between your fire and a neighbor's porch. A wood fire's drifting smoke and stray embers travel fast across that gap. A gas fire pit puts out neither — it lights clean, throws nothing, and cuts off the instant you close the valve, so it stays usable through most of the wood-fire restrictions the city imposes in dry stretches. Natural-gas mains run through much of Asheville, which makes the connection straightforward on in-town lots.
