Are sealed direct-vent fireplaces the better choice for a home with radon concerns?
Generally yes. A sealed direct-vent fireplace pulls combustion air from outside and exhausts outside through one coaxial pipe, so it never uses your indoor air and never depressurizes the house. That means it won't pull extra radon up from the soil the way an open wood fire can — making it the radon-friendliest way to add a fireplace.
Why sealed combustion is the difference
Radon rides in on air pressure. Anything that draws air out of your living space — an open fireplace, a room-air wood stove, big exhaust fans — makes the house pull replacement air from below, where the radon is. A direct-vent unit closes that loop: the firebox is sealed behind glass, its air comes from outdoors through the coaxial pipe, and its exhaust goes back out the same way. Your indoor air pressure barely moves. That's the same sealed design that makes direct-vent safe in tight homes and bedrooms, and it's why we default to it for modern construction across Asheville, Fletcher, and Arden.
What it does and doesn't solve
Be clear-eyed: direct-vent keeps a new fireplace from making radon worse — it does not lower the radon you already have. If your home tests high, you still need a radon test and, if warranted, a mitigation system from a radon contractor. Direct-vent simply means the fireplace stays out of the fight instead of adding to it. Ventless gas logs sit at the other end: they use room air and keep all their combustion products indoors, so they're not what we'd steer a radon-cautious owner toward.
